  • Merriam-Webster Online Excellent dictionary. Each word is accompanied by audio clips. Hear the word spoken by clicking on the audio icon. This site also includes sophisticated word games.
  • Wordsmyth - The Educational Dictionary & Thesaurus A very easy to use online dictionary.
  • Columbia Encyclopedia Containing nearly 51,000 entries and with more than 80,000 hypertext cross-references.
  • Encyclopedia.com A general encyclopedia of over 50,000 entries from the Columbia Encyclopedia. Each entry includes links to magazine and newspaper articles - unfortunately these are only available by subscription.

Listening

  • CBC Can listen to live radio broadcasts. Detailed information about all its shows. Good authentic Canadian content.
  • ESL Wonderland Listening activities on topics such as human cloning and the death penalty.
  • Listening by Level Divided into levels, from beginner to advanced. Links take students to different listening websites, based on their level.
  • Randall's ESL Cyber-Listening Lab Divided into categories: general listening quizzes, long conversations with real video, quizzes for academic purposes, and short listening exercises.
  • National Public Radio (NPR Online) Archives of all of its radio broadcasts. Range from simple to difficult. Authentic material.

  • English Exercises Online Great site. Everything from vocabulary, grammar and dictation, reading comprehension, and spelling. Includes good links to the kind of practice you're looking for.
  • English Club In the "Learn English Zone," there's everything from reading and writing, to quizzes and jokes.
  • Interesting Things for ESL Students Word games, puzzles, quizzes, grammar, reading, and vocabulary. Beginner level.

Pronunciation

  • Spoken American English Focuses on contractions and conversational pronunciation.
  • Sounds of English Activities and exercises (require Real Player). Also has good links to general listening and pronunciation websites.
  • Accent School Free online pronunciation software targeted at upper-intermediate/advanced level ESL students.
